Great Video With Christian Lessons For Children, May 2, 1998

High quality computer animation and Christian themes has made this one of our family's favorite videos in only 3 short days! Bob (a tomato) and Larry (a cucumber) are vegetables that our three pre-school age children laugh and sing along with as the characters explain there's no reason to be afraid of the dark because "God is bigger than the Boogie-man." Larry also stars in the title role of "Daniel and the Lion's Den," a great story told in a manner and fashion for young viewers to understand and relate to. The video closes out with a short scripture for young viewers which helps children learn biblical verse and how it can apply to their young experiences. As soon as other videos are released (currently only one other "Veggie Tale" video is available out of a series of nine) we will quickly be adding them to our collection. A definite must for parents who set high standards (quality and morally) for what their children watch if they must watch TV. We can't say enough good things about the video. END

VeggieTales launched 10 years ago with this video, which includes two shorter segments. The first, "Tales from the Crisper," teaches Jr. Asparagus that he has nothing to fear because "God is Bigger then the Boogie Man." The second retells the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den with songs feature Larry as the hero and Archibald Asparagus as King Darius. (Mr. Nezzer hadn't been created yet.) In between is the very first silly song, "The Water Buffalo Song."

Watching it again this weekend, I was struck by two things. First, how much fun this video is. With Jr. they perfectly captured a little kid and his logic and created some truly funny moments with talk about the slime monster. Although the funniest moment belongs to Daniels chatter as he's being carried to the lion's den. The second is how far they and the technology have come. By today's standards, the animation is bad. Their recent projects with bigger budgets are much better looking. However, that doesn't affect the fun at all. I almost guarantee that you'll have one song or another stuck in your head after watching this.

If there's a better way to teach kids Bible truths then this series, I sure don't know what it is. They're truly entertaining for the entire family. Heck, I buy them and I don't even have kids.

This book is cute and colorful and perfect for kids who are enjoying fellowship with our Lord Jesus. It has small snippets of bible stories, simple prayers that are easy to recite & remember, beautiful illustrations, bible verses, and 2 very full CD's of praise songs that correspond to the prayer pages in the book. This is a perfect bedside companion for devotional reading and also the CD's are fun for anytime. The kids love to sing along. The book is very well made too with nice thick paper, and a puffy hardcover. I highly recommend this book!

Pros:
The illustrations have lots of ethnic diversity in them. The explanations of big words and of the "prayers" are nice and easy to understand. Adults will enjoy the quotes about prayer in the little box labeled "My Little Prayer Reminder" on each page.

Cons:
A significant number of the "prayers" are not actually prayers but are rather quotes about prayer, song lyrics that happen to mention the word prayer but are not themselves actually a prayer, or they are verses from the Bible that people prayed but that would not be an appropriate prayer for a child (for example, Abram's prayer isn't appropriate for a child to echo since it says, 'O sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless?' Genesis 15:2). Thus the book title "100 Prayers God Loves to Hear" isn't really a good description of the contents.

The hard back book, showing Jonah praying while still held in the whale's jaws, is an alternatively pictured two pages companion. Children memory capturing drawings, friendly and funny, promote a thought stimulating mood in full color. Quotations about prayer and praying are selected from the Bible, and from religious sayings, by St. Augustine to Francis of Assisi, and of wise thinkers as R. L. Stevenson and R. Niebuhr. Two Cd's cling to the inside front and back covers, with corresponding hymns, prayers, and songs. The prayers are formatted in children own language, to appeal to young kids and toddlers, with a mission of teaching religious virtues, through their background stories that children could relate and enjoy when they hear them again and again.

The book could be helpful as a devotional, a different prayer is read daily by mom or dad to the youngster, who may then listen to the related praise song on the cd, (identified at the top of each right page with a cd image to lead you to the beautifully written song), which children can hear again before enjoying the singing. Here, the book introduces the prayer on the left side page with relevant information about it, and how it could applied in children daily activities, in language that appeals to children, and catch their attention. The right side page has a quotation or comment in "My little prayer reminder" that follows a beautiful illustration.

I think that this book has a two fold mission, training the parents to pray, training them to share spiritual dialogue with their sons and daughters. This should encourage the children to practice a spontaneous loving encounter, when the child expresses his feelings and emotions addressed to our heavenly father, extending into a life of prayer in happy and sorrowful occasions.

This was one of the very first books my now 3 year old daughter received when she was born. We have read it to her almost every night since. She loves it! Now she's pretty much memorized it. I buy it for everyone I know who is having a baby.
